Located in a area just west of the MK Dons football stadium this small pocket of housing is known locally as Granby Court.
Its made up of two independent buildings which are in turn made up of small flat based accommodation, centered around five courtyard areas. Parking for the flats is situated around the perimeter with a central shed/hut for bikes. Having recently read a 1973 copy of Architecture Design* i found a number of similarities between the actual housings built on the Granby site including basic design and placement and a project called the 'Denbigh Hostel' which is cover on page 396 (the journal starts on page 348). The Denbigh Hostel project was to house 320 construction workers during the major build period of MIlton Keynes, it was going to be made up of 10 buildings created using a pre-cast concrete system. The building was to be a far cry from the ones which were actually built because the proposed buildings would have been circular in appearance with stepped out residential part to 'unsure the visual variety'. The plan was once those residence had moved on that the accommodation would be put to use by either students or nurses in the future. Similarities between the two projects include that both would centre around a large open spaces for social actives, have wardens to monitor the site and communal rooms. * I bought my copy of the Architecture Design magazine from the City Discovery Centre Library - please contact them to see if theyve got any left its great to see how the Development Corporation had ideas for developments and the way they didn't quite turn out as planed. The site is currently managed by MIlton Keynes Council and is mainly rented accommodation. There had been some talk that the site was earmarked as an area for redevelopment and possible demolition.
